The new "Tidy"
One of my clients made a valuable observation the other day.
She said that in the past fine decorating was assumed to be for the wealthy. So, buyers looking in most price ranges were satisfied with clean and neat. That has changed. With television shows like Trading Places and all the wonderful information on the Home Networks and the Learning Networks along with magazine racks full of low cost decorating ideas, plus stores like Linens and Things, Bed Bath and Beyond, TJ Maxx and others it is easy to have a finely decorated home on a blue collar budget.
So, buyers are expecting good decorating. Buyers are more aware of what good looks like. They expect it the way they expected tidy in the past. So, if you have a plainly decorated home the buyer discounts the price and is suspicious of just how much care has been taken of the home, similar to yesteryear’s buyers who felt the same way about stained carpeting and stained walls.
